All those who don’t want to here this, please avert eyes now.

I am having a completely egocentric moment, focused entirely on the wants of little old me!

This, my friends, is my EEEEEEEEEEE! moment. A complete second of unbridled enthusiasm and excitement about the holiday that literally is just around the corner. By this time tomorrow, I will be in the air (in an aeroplane, obviously). I simply cannot wait, probably to do with my permanent tension building and personally encouraged anticipation. Having spent most of the month surfing the internet for trip ideas, restaurant recommendations, resort reviews, I have completely come to the conclusion that we just need to wait until we are there!

Useful, eh?!

Anyways, today was spent getting the last few things I needed (plasters, mouthwash, little cans of hair mousse just in case) and wishing I was already there! Woop, holiday here it comes!

A busy day, t’has been! My blogging frequency is about to plummet, as I am preparing to go on Holiday. Everything is nearly packed. I hope to leave two scheduled articles behind, but I also have to write a number of paid blog posts and articles before I go, so I’m not sure how late I’ll be up writing them before I leave on Sunday! To tempt you back, I will be writing a post of just what to pack for a holiday (real experience to draw on here!) and the very best vintage bikini styles on the market – both retro inspired and real vintage. I shall also hopefully get around to a couple of posts giving you links to cool articles and stuff to look at.

Aw, look at how I convince myself that people will mind me going away!

Today (oh glorious, hot, sunny today) was spent with a certain degree of spaced-out-ed-ness. I switched into holiday mood at about 9am, and have been in a blurred and unproductive mood since. Not too unproductive, as I did manage to drift haphazardly into town, and somehow purchase two most beautiful pairs of shoes. For super-cheap sale prices!

bertie tom lace up shoes

First, a stunning yet functional pair with great contrasting sole and chunky heel. I could honestly wear these for a long walk (allbeit not on muddy ground) due to the chunky heel and dependable comfy fit of Bertie shoes. A confession? I have the  pearl version of these… I know they would fit!

A-bow blue patent heel - bertie

Second, a pair that honestly may be one of the most beautiful items offootwear I have EVER owned. See, they are so beautiful that I have resorted to capitals! Aside from being surprisingly easy to walk in, these are true, unusually coloured works of art.

Other than buying shoes, I have really experienced the  rare joy of British summers. When it is sunny, this can be one of the best countries to be in in the world. Not so much when rainy though! When the sun does dare to creep through the grey clouds and shine, however, we are in for a treat. The bright light shines on shimmering green lives, jewel coloured lakes. The world becomes beautiful!

How not to look good in a Bikini May 27, 2009

Take one Horse. Combine it with a large angry fly. Latch it onto your leg (your tender tender leg) and allow it to bite you three times. When it has developed fully into large bruises, you are ready to go. No looking good in my bikini this holiday!

When I was at uni I was introduced to The Dresden Dolls. The pair produce “Brechtian punk cabaret”, loud and dark music with a huge sense of irony. Check them out, they are great and more than a little bit amusing!

Taking concepts such as robots and politics, this dynamic duo invert them, putting the ideas smack bang upside down on their pretty little heads. As an internal activist at uni (by which I mean I thought loudly about the state of affairs, but was rarely a good enough person to do anything about it), this music really was a vent, a chance to look at the world through quirky coloured glasses.

This band have a very distinctive personal style – lots of rock/punk chic combined with geisha style makeup and Alice in Wonderland wild dresses/suits. All in all, they look fabulous and over the top!

If you want to work the “Dresden” look, then here is how to do it!

For him:

Vintage or reproduction is the way to go for this suave but individual men’s look. Pick a theme and stick with it throughout the outfit, whether it is mints/greys as above, or an unusual take on the classic tux.

mens tuxedo shirt

Start with this brilliant ruffled tuxedo shirt – the detailing is great. Accompany this classic shirt with a vintage pinstripe suit, like this one in a classic indie grey fabric.

The shoes are the pivotal part of the outfit for guys – think dramatic flair and more than a little bit of wonderful weirdness! These two choice are perfect – first up is Irregular choice with the slightly subtle option – but with wild and noticeable soles. Red or Dead are the second choice, with a healthy dose of shoe bling!

The look? Smart and preppie, but with a certain amount of individuality and vintage vibe. Of course the key is a brilliant bowler and lots of makeup. I don’t juts mean a swipe of indie eyeliner, but the whole shebang. Pales cheeks, dark eyes, and sultry plum lips. Strangely attractive, and all the More so if you are blessed with beautiful cheekbones.

For her:

As you haveprobably noticed, Amanda has a very distinctive style. Firstly I need to let you know that this makeup is not for the fainthearted. You need to go all out with very pale skin, dark eyes and tiny lips. White over your lips and reinvent them with tiny bud like decorations- a little lip brush will serve this purpose perfectly.

geisha face

Once you’ve perfected the face, you need to get the look. Think retro/vintage items that ooze girliness, but then team them with messy hairstyles and coloured tights. Striped ones are even better!

Try this stunning brown dress if you want to keep the outfit neutral- just be sure to dress it up with big hair and stunning shoes. Alternatively go the whole way with this springtime dress from Vivien of Holloway – it gives the perfect girly vibe but with added zing. It also has tons of potential for being turned into a rock chic statement.

The tights clinch the deal for this outfit (particularly so since Amanda is known for her minimal accessorising). Try the typical striped pair with these luxury knee high socks, or go for softer sexier ruffles with this unusual and stunning pair. Team with simple black Mary Jane’s or a coordinating shoe, and the outfit should be complete!

And there you have it! How to get the look of a punk chick and a decadent indie lad – all with extensive makeup, and stunning clothes! Go forth, and rock!

Happy Bank Holiday! May 25, 2009

Happy Bank Holiday everyone! Summer is my favourite season not just because of the theoretical potential for sunny days, but because there are so many 4-day weeks! What more could you want?! (Aside from 3-day weeks, obviously!)

Anyway, this weekend was spent down at a family do of Ben’s. I spent the first day in a state of tense panic – he has thirty odd cousins (the majority of whom were al at this party!), whilst I have a grand total of three! I was so far outside my comfort zone that I couldn’t even see its walls in the distance! What an amazing thing to have such a huge family tree – and how strange it must seem to them for someone to just have a little happy nuclear family!

Thankfully they are all a little bit bonkers and very approachable, so soon enough (once a few glasses of pink of white dutch courage had been swallowed) I was chatting way happily. I cant say I remember all their names, but I know a few of them! Impressive eh?

The party was made all the better by a large bouncy castle slide. When I was little these slides started being quite regimented – we paid our 50p and were strictly allowed 3 slides, with no more than a minute at the top. It was lovely to be allowed to clamber up and slide down as many times (and in as many positions) as possible!

Note: the PJ bottoms were to ensure Ben’s family didn’t get to know me too well that day!

Unfortunately for me, clumsiness and stupidity has a habit of following me around. A mere few hours into the night, I locked the car keys in the car. What followed was a lot of mocking (justifiably!!) and a discovery that together, 10 tipsy males can eventually get one pair of car-keys out of a locked car – as long as they have 2 wire coat-hangers. It was hilarious and I do believe I will never be forgotten – or live this one down!

car keys

Lots of male bonding!!

Thankfully, the weekend did have a more positive lasting memory – a dress for Richard’s wedding the week after our holiday.  I found a Ted Baker dress in a size 8 (a size 8 – haven’t fitted in one of those for years!) that fit like a dream, and cost a huge (not) 6 quid! I’m not putting a picture up, you’ll have to wait to see the full effect (with tan) in a couple of weeks time.

Body Issues May 22, 2009

Today (and for the past few days) I have been having to deal with a massive wave of body self loathing. I’m not my biggest fan at the best of times, so periods like this are especially hard to deal with. It is particularly difficult when I am having to pack skimpy summer outfits and think about bikinis.

My own illogicality is starting to wind Ben up. He spends so much of his time trying to reassure me, as I cry and berate and beat myself up about the imaginary lumps bumps and horrible self I see before me. I wonder if he is close to giving up on me, as silly and self-destructive and miserable as I am. Since we first started going out I have been systematically trying to find reasons we shouldn’t be together, reasons why he shouldn’t like me, ways to push him away and banish him to the realms of good memories – things that didn’t last. Luckily for me he is a stunningly (annoyingly) resilient fellow, battered down by little and stubborn enough to beat even me. Now, however, my inability to see the good things – the holiday, the sun, the fact we are happy and both have good lives – seems to be digging away at him.

I would love to stop, and become the loving and enthusiastic girl that resides underneath this self-hating exterior. Unfortunately, currently, this girl is trapped. I don’t have the foggiest idea how to draw her out, and sense a metaphorical carrot (preferable dipped in chocolate) is needed. I need a healthy dose of unpoisoned reality, a harsh look in the mirror at what I have become.

The facts? I’m reasonable looking (more so once I finally get my hair cut, it’s currently at a kink outwards stage… I can see it marching along. Kink Out! Kink Out! DO NOT LET THE BRUSH DEFEAT YOU!), have a reasonable-to-good body, have friends (although I am very lonely at the moment), have a boyfriend who loves me and a work where I am interested most of the time. I just can’t see it!

Sorry everyone, a miserable post today. But I needed to vent, to put my feelings down on paper and have a whine about it. I just hope that over the weekend I manage to do something about the self-hate that is damaging me, before it gets beyond repair.

*sigh*
