Dream Diaries | Bring on the Vampires December 23, 2009

I don’t know if I have mentioned it before, but I have fabulous dreams. Sometimes they are scary, often they are dark, but they are always weird brilliantly entertaining. Having had some excellent dreams that I think should one day be turned into stories, I thought perhaps the time had come to share some of my dreams on a semi regular basis. If this is a good idea, let me know – and if it isn’t, tell me so I can stop doing it!

Anyway, recent dreams have focused around, surprise surprise, vampires and zombies – sometimes but not always in the same dream! The plethora of vampire books, television programmes and films has probably not helped, and I have always had a bit of an obsession with zombie films anyway!

What do you think of my most recent Vampire dreams (please remember this comes in at the middle of the story!):

The night is dark around me as I wake up, staring around the tiny room in which I am trapped. I can just make out the ceiling high above me, and can see a slither of light falling through the window from the street light outside. Opposite me lies another little bed, in which is a girl, my friend, who breathes slowly and steadily.

As I take in my environment I hear a banging noise on the door, harsh and abrasive. Within seconds of the knock it swings open, and two men walk in. Immediately I remember the situation, have flash backs to the Vampires taking over, to the rebellion and the drama that led to me being here. I remember my family dying, trapped in a room and burnt by the flames.

Whilst I squint at the light a Vampire grabs me, pulls me up, slaps me lightly across the face. I look at him with resentment, but not hate – that I save for his companions. Where he is light-haired, pale and thin, his companions are dark and serious, with dull brown eyes and broad shoulders. Dangerous in comparison. The young one, who I now know is my owner, seems quieter, calmer, and has a look in his cold eyes that isn’t entirely cruel.

Eventually, having been manhandled and thrown around the room, his accompanying vampires left the room, leaving me and my friend alone with the strange blond-haired man. You could see at a glance that he wasn’t human – his skin was deathly white and the hint of fangs could be seen beneath his lips. I know, somehow, that I and the girl are his, belongings traded between vampires for food and favours. whilst disgusted, I can see that he is not cruel, that he does this only because he has to. I would much rather that it were that way around than for him to take pleasure in the horrors he had delivered upon me and my roommate.

Alone again later, I finally get my first chance of the day to speak to the girl. We exchange our daily pleasantries, a routine from our old lives that we cling to, reluctant to let them go in case our humanity goes with them. Then I see a look cross her face, a dark look full of menace, and she begins on the plan. We will leave, sneak out of the window, take the first chance available to climb down the sheds outside and escape into the distance. Whilst I am not sure of the sense of this – outside it a burning littered hell, full of the dark forms of vampire sliding between shadows – I get the sense that decision was a long time coming – this girl will never be used again.

Whilst I didn’t agree, I ended up not having much choice. When our vampire returned in the evening, teeth bared and hungry, I proffered myself to him, offering up my raw neck once again for his pleasures. Just as I felt the tips of his teeth caressing my jugular, something happened. Bloody poured down the front of me – the girl had stabbed him with a long and unusual silver knife and watched as he died on the floor.

There was no looking back. What had been done had been done and we had no chance of redemption. Our only hope of escape was to run, to climb, and so that is what we did. She boosted me through the window, and I turned to pull her out. As we stood outside we surveyed the landscape, getting our bearings for the challenge that was just about to begin. To our left was a  small town, on the outskirts of which our building was stood. I could see buildings burning nearer the centre, and imagine pockets of survivors and rebels hiding out, fighting for our cause. More powerful than my imaginings, however, were the things I could see before my very eyes. The vampires in clusters, some with eyes deep red and terrifying, glowing in the night. The sheer quantity of them, organised and calculated. Even worse, they were by no means feral or wild, and fact which simply made them all the more terrifying to us.

With a glance at each other, and without a plan, we began our descent.

And that is the end of part 1. What do you think? Do you want to see a bit more along these lines?

My Outfit as a Professional Fashion Blogger!

My Professional Fashion Blogger Outfit - Ooh eh?!

I have been asked to put together an outfit for the new Dorothy Perkins blog, Style Society. The theme is still Going Out, Staying Out – so I decided to opt for something suitable for a night on the razzle. I have been obsessed with velvet and biker chic for a while now, especially in punky combination – so that was the obvious place to start. I also decided to go for a few splashes of pink – because this would very likely be exactly what I would wear!

What would your perfect outfit be?

The countdown has begun–not only until the end of the year–but until the end of the first decade in the 21st century.  That’s kind of amazing to think about.  Styletastic and Sway, Sway, Away! both look at fashion from the Oughts with two distinctly different visions. [the3st] interviews the founder of ModCloth, while Wicked & Whimsy reviews Closet Confidential (by the hilarious Winona of DaddyLikey fame!).

Since this will be my last edit of links a la mode for this year, see you all in 2010!

Thoroughly Scared: Paranormal Activity December 17, 2009

Long overdue, I thought the time had come for an update on the terrifying horror that is… Paranormal Activity.

Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity

I went to see this last week with a group of girlfriends from where I used to work. Following a discussion about how many of us enjoy horror movies, we decided on a whim to go and see the film that all the critics have been talking about, Paranormal Activity. Given our apparent greed for all things horror and even gore, we were sure that we would love a film that was being touted as “The scariest film of the decade”. Despite winding outselves up and up about it, discussing the titbits of storyline we had picked up on, even telling our own ghost stories, I don’t think any of us had quite realised just how scary this film was likely to be.

We met on the night, all wound up and excited about getting scared. I must admit that we went into that film wanting to be scared, giggly and borderline hysterical. That said, as soon as we sat down in the crowded auditorium it became clear that we weren’t the only ones who were a little bit het up about what was to come. Dare I say it, there was a fission in the air!

Well. What can I say. The film was not only cleverly made, realistic and totally believable (kudos to the couple by the way, who were endearing, grumpy, makeup free and just like most couples out there!), but bloody terrifying. I don’t mean just a little bit scary jump-once-or-twice kind of scary – I mean properly bloodcurdling, frightening enough to have most of the audience screaming, jumping and gasping, and me and my girls freaking out! It was made worse by the fact that the fear factor built up so quickly, in the dark, just waiting for the next event, and that the nasty stuff happened in the day by the end as well. I have never ever been in a film like it – and I have seen some horrors in my time! Men and women were falling of their seat, and you could feel the reverberations of shock every time something creepy happened.

My adrenaline was well and truly pumping when I left – yet I have to say that I LOVED it, completely and utterly! Terrifying and oh-so-simply wonderful.

Wow!

Buyers Remorse December 15, 2009

There is nothing worse than buying something that you have always wanted, or have accidently fallen madly in love with, and then realising that it completely and utterly doesn’t live up to expectations. Sure you can sell it on again if it doesn’t fit – but the magic of the moment of ripping it out of the packaging is completely dead and gone.

It happened to me today. I ordered the most lovely looking pair of brown suede Irregular choice winter boots, with a cute fleecy top, strap up foldover and sensible low heel that I could actually wear when the temperature plummets. They arrived, I dragged off the cute pink tissue papers, forced my feet into them, et voila! Clown feet! I am not exaggerating people – this was a serious case of the wide and longs for my little Tootsies.

Irregular Choice Winter Boots

I was going to put an uplifting list at around about this point of the blog. Something that explained that these situations can be avoided, that spending some quality time with the internet and researching each and every purchase can mean you will never have to experience the deep dark sorrows of buyers remorse. Then, however, I realised that it was all bollocks. Completely made up. That sometimes, you can spend four years preparing for a purchase, putting together neat and efficient pros and cons lists using your recent excel training, quizzing your friends and comparing colour swatches with your room to make sure it doesn’t clash. You can do all of this, and what you ordered can arrive - and it can be completely utterly wrong.

Sometimes it is on their end, they have simply missold it or listed it wrong. Other time, unfortunately enough, you have been a right lummox and bought something you should never have bought, no matter how clever you tried to be about it.

So here is the real point of this blog – to make you realise that you are not alone. That mistakes happen, things sometimes just won’t fit, that this is a just a dark dark day and the future will get brighter, and other such uplifting merry bullshit. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and recover – so those shoes didn’t fit? Sell them, send them back, buy another pair. Buy 10 other pairs, in the hope that the factory will produce one that comes up small at just the right place. Do something and fix it – or cry, eat ice cream, and deny it ever happened. Either one is fine with me, and a great way to deal with the challenge that is buyers remorse!

This weekend has been incredibly dull, incredibly dull! I have been stuck at home having to work on a market research proposal for my course (could you imagine anything more riveting?), and pretty much the only thing worth looking at is our pretty tree, which we got earlier in the week. It needs more tinsel than one forlorn strip, but otherwise I think it is looking quite pretty!

At this time of year, even the smallest decision can feel like the biggest burden.  As holiday shopping season swings into full and relentless motion this month, the choices we make as consumers can often feel overwhelming.  This week’s compelling roundup of reading explores these choices from every possible angle and makes it clear that as bloggers, we should feel empowered, not overwhelmed.  Whether it’s writing about a specialty gift guide for a geek chic girl, choosing the perfect red lip color or even exploring the nuanced difference in quality between designer and mid-priced items, these choices are what make us unique and connect us as an independent fashion blogging community.

Scaring Myself Silly! Paranormal Activity December 9, 2009

Clip from Paranormal Activity, the film

After a failed attempt to go and see Paranormal Activity last week (it was booked up hours in advance, thanks to Orange Wednesdays!), some of the girls from my old workplace and I are braving the fear again to head to the cinema tonight. Last time, having been told we couldn’t see the film, we headed off to Cafe Rouge instead for a highly decadent meal that consisted entirely of dessert. Somehow, just somehow, I feel that the film tonight may be a little less pleasurable than scoffing my face full of fluffy crepe with banana, chocolate and ice-cream!

That said, I do get a certain pleasure in scaring myself silly. Dependant on my mood I am either largely unaffected by a scary flick, or utterly crippled. I was doing fine through The Grudge recently until I got absolutely terrified by the shadows. Yes, you heard that right, the shadows. I swear, as soon as the creepy dark started sliding down the creepy hallway, I was curled in a corner, rocking back and forth. But even considering my apparent cowardice, my body enjoys the rarity of being chock full of adrenaline, of jumping and feeling scared and generally being very paranoid and very silly. I come home feeling both skittish and keyed up, a combination of emotions the result of which I don’t particularly envy Ben having to deal with!

OK, I have talked myself around to the idea of being scared…. bring on the ghosties!

Considering that I used to hate yellow with a passion, and have done a complete about turn. Nowadays I love it, but unfortunately my pasty yellow skin just looks incredibly ill if I wear something in a bright shade of canary. This is even more of a shame than it normally is when I come across something like this – a gorgeous yellow tulip dress that is overflowing with attitude. I adore it, and its ridiculousness! This Cockney Rebel dress is available on eBay for a bargainous £14.99 Buy It Now. I want it!
