The ethics of Fashion can be a blurry area. With so much to think about when we buy, from construction to provenance, how can we pick our way through such a minefield of issues and emerge with our ethics intact?
We all have a duty as consumers to be as informed as possible about the purchases we make, and this weeks Links à la Mode can help. Amongst this weeks picks Fashion in My Eyes talks about locally made fashion, Style Eyes discusses Organic Cotton, Hello Beauty buys some recycled sneakers, Oranges and Apples sorts the wheat from the chaff in second hand clothing and Shrimp Salad Circus brings you natural make up.
Once your done being educated we also have a good smattering of fashion frivolity to be getting on with too, and there’s even more on the original forum thread!

Not much time to post – I haven’t seemed to have many words this week – life is stressful on many counts, and it is playing havoc with my brain. It only works if it has to, and it clearly doesn’t deem this blog as necessary. Anyway, I thought I would pop on and share my Ruby Shoesdays contribution, the first time I have actually participated in this shoe challenge! Which was, of course, also a chance to wear shoes no. 8, but lovely Belle & Mimi shoes from Barratts.

I am now the proud owner of a reversible cape. On one side it features the most divine oversized tartan-esque pattern, whilst the other side is a simple mint green. Although I get a lot of looks when I wear it I think I have fallen in love, as it lets me indulge me love of being tucked up and swathed in fabric, whilst giving me spaces for my hands to escape when needs be. I wore this with my cute Faith heels (oh, poor Faith, R.I.P), and my new and perfectly fitting satin Fever dress. So perty!

I had THE most wonderful night on Wednesday. It was our Sew Make Believe Book Club meeting, and we all met in the pub to partake in intelligent and fascinating chat with intelligent and fascinating SMB women. And, an added bonus, we all actually liked the book, The Little Stranger by Sarah Walters.
It got me thinking about how lucky I am to have the life that I have ended up having. I am surrounded my amazing people – clever, articulate, funny and above all else loving., Some of these I met through existing friends, some through Twitter and some through family, but all of them mean so much to me. For the first time since moving to Leamington I feel like I have a network, who will be there for me if I need it. What is odd is that some of these girls I have only known for such a short period of time, but it feels like they have been my pals for years.
I love them, and because of them, I love my life. Even when it gets tough and horrible they still keep me up and buoyant.
So, as a celebration, I thought I would share Cie’s wonderful idea with you, and write a little slip to some of my girls to tell them just why I love them so.
Dear Cie
Here are three things I love about the way you look:
I love your beautiful curves, and how you have this womanly shape with such a tiny tiny waist. I love your hair, it glows and shines and, quite frankly, I wish I had hair just like it. I love (and envy) your fabulous cheekbones, so strong and defined and beautiful!
Love
Lauren
Dear Roisin
Here are three things I love about the way you look:
I love love love that you can wear heels all the time and never even show a moments preference for flats. I adore your short stature, it makes you so delicate and feminine and generally beautiful. I love your smile, it is both cheeky and cute in equal measure, and can be just as loving as it is foul-mouthed!
Love
Lauren
Dear Laura
Here are three things I love about the way you look:
I love your incredibly long legs, they seem to continue right up into the clouds, and they perfectly match your gorgeous height. I love your rosy cheeks, they glow in a way that mine never could! I love your hair, the most perfect shade of brown, it always seems to be deeper in colour and texture than normal hair is!
Love
Lauren
Dear Nommi
Here are three things I love about the way you look:
I love your huge and beautiful eyes, they are such a stunning shade of chocolate-brown and yet at the same time they are really light and bright. I adore your curves, so incredibly feminine and the most wonderful hourglass shape. I love you boobs, they are just wonderful through and through in a totally non-pervy way!
Love
Lauren

1930′s Inspired Wedding Dresses April 20, 2010

Reader Rebecca contacted me to see if I could help her with a 1930s inspired fashion enquiry:
I’m getting married in September. Any advice on a source for 1930’s style bias cut gowns? Preferably budget friendly (under $1000)
Thanks!
Rebecca
Well, being as I am now a bit of a 1930s fashion addict, I simply couldn’t resist the chance to hunt for some seriously gorgeous dresses. You see, in my opinion bias cut 1930s gowns are perfectly matched to weddings, as they work well with long stretched of fabric – and consequently will work brilliantly in a blinding white or ivory. Even better, there is something sleek, elegant and pure about the simplicity of 1930′s dress design, and I can see this working wonderfully for a wedding dress.
So, what bias cut wedding dresses can I find?
Well, I started with looking for some actual vintage dresses, Obviously you are more restricted on sizes with these sorts of dresses, although a good seamstress will be able to take them in and generally make them fit well – it is only if they are too small that you have a problem! My go-to source for these was Etsy, which is definitely one of the best places for affordable vintage – I would keep checking back on it to see what the Etsy sellers get in.
The first dress here is, quite simply exquisite. It is also less than $500, which for a piece of this quality and elegance is pretty rare. Even better, this is a vintage dress that manages to look modern at the same time. The second dress needs a bit more work – but if you get rid of the horrible puffy sleeves you could have something wonderful for only $200.
There are a lot fo other vintage wedding dresses here.
For the modern 1930s inspired wedding dresses I have included a range of options and sellers. They range from just about the $1000 limit (the time has come to haggle…) to a bargain basement $200, to give you lots of choice.
The pure simplicity of this bias cute dress from Conscious clothing meant that I simply had to include it. It isn’t fancy, it isn’t over the top, but it is beautiful. Of course, this is the most expensive gown, coming in at $1,140.
Interestingly, this J. Crew dress is not only the cheapest, but it is one of my favourites, It may not be the obvious place to shop for a wedding dress, but with examples like this it definitely ought to be considered! Remember, don’t shop exclusively in bridal shops, as many evening dress providers will sell bias cuts. Oh, and this particular example is for sale for $275 with free shipping.
I love the chiffon in this dress, it makes a nice change from all the millions of satin bias cut dress. Satin does work well cut on the bias, of course, but I think seeing something a little more summery and floaty!
Finally, a dress that although bias cut, isn’t perhaps as vintage inspired as the rest. I suppose you could have seen something with this kind of base and trail, but you definitely would never have seen all those ruffles in the 30s! Oh well, I had to put it in – and mention that it costs $449…
Hopefully this will have helped, and will have given you some ideas! Let me know if you find your dress!

No, don’t worry, I haven’t been going mad and happily wearing three pairs of shoes at once. But I have had a few outfits this week that I have liked – and the weather has been nice – so I have three outfit shots to share with you.

Outfit Shot - Red and Pink
The outfit above is one of the first times that I have tried to combine red and pink. I have been leaning more and more towards fancy-pants colour combinations, and this was the time to let rip! I felt the deep pink and the bright red worked in a way that was obvious, but not blinding!
Dress: Unknown
Jumper: Primark
Tights: Primark
Heels: Dotty Ps

Outfit shot - Studs and Knit
I am not as sure about this outfit. It looked quite cool from behind, with the amazing huge studs and the over-sized chunky knit – but from the front it looked a little… slouchy. That said, I wanted to be relaxed – and I was darn comfy!
Jumper: Vintage
Skull shirt: New Look
Jeans: Topshop
Studded boots: Topshop

Outfit shot - Summery in Yellow
Finally, my favourite outfit. Today was beautiful – hot, sunny, absolutely wonderful. Consequently I thought the time had come to take in this beautiful summer dress I bought on eBay. I folded it in on the seams and simple sewed it up inside out – it barely took a few seconds, but it worked and fit like a dream! It also turns out I can wear yellow! Whilst in town I nipped into Space NK in a fit of excitement, to buy my first gorgeous Lime Crime lipstick, from the wonderful and immensely talented Doe Deere. I was so pleased it lived up to expectations and was as bold and colourful as I had hoped for!
Dress: Vintage, eBay
Heels: Tommy Hilfiger, TK Maxx
I hope you are all having a lovely weekend!
Entertain Me! April 15, 2010

I have just finished reading the Michael Crichton book, Timeline. I believe we are going to watch the, apparently terrible, film tonight! The book itself is brilliant, and is a wonderful combination of history and science fiction that managed to simultaneously make me interested in the “Dark” ages and Quantum physics at the same time. No mean feat!
Something said within the pages of this book, however, made me think in some depth about something other than knights and scholars. At the end (and don’t worry, this doesn’t give anything away), a character delivers a speech on the ”mania for entertainment” that pervades out modern culture. Essentially he explains that in increasingly safe and repetitive times, the greatest human fear is not about disease or death, but of being bored. Of having nothing to do. Of living our lives from birth until death with nothing but the ordinary in the middle.
The concept got me thinking. It made me think about how odd society is, and how far from our roots we have aimlessly drifted. Don’t get me wrong – human accomplishments, technology and the extended life expectancy are brilliant, amazing, spectacular. However, they do mean that we live in a world where entertainment (the sort of thrills and excitement that life alone would once upon a time have delivered) is delivered through a box in a room. We go to the cinema, we watch TV. Now we have got to the point where we so crave thrills that we go to theme parks to be zoomed around mechanical structures at absurd speed – we do anything we can to keep ourselves entertained.
The book talks about the pointlessness of all this effort. After all, it points out, living this way may be entertaining, but it isn’t authentic. It lacks that certain undefinable quality that makes us feel like we are really experiencing life.
How far have we come from our past, from the reality of life back in the day, that we are no longer entertained?
What an interesting concept!

I want this. Desperately. Some of the gals on Twitter were chatting about it earlier, and then the lovely Siany had to go and write about it on her blog, A Change Of A Dress, too. That meant I simply couldn’t avoid it any more, and I had to share it with you guys! Oh, and before you rush out to buy it, it is worth knowing that it costs £4400 – so it might be a saving up jobbie!
