Girly nights in October 16, 2008

One of the problems with being in a new town is that girly nights in are rarer than they ought to be.

In my opinion girly nights in (of the pink fizz, TV and endless chatting variety) are one of the nicest ways to spend an evening. Tucked up on the sofa with warm lights and plenty to talk about, I generally find that time dashes past. Last night was one such example.

Cie, from Secondhand Shopper, and Jo (new girl at Ben’s work, who is great fun!) came over after work, and we sat in the living room with the TV on, but generally just nattering on about whatever crossed our minds. Ciecooked a fantastic salmon and noodle stir fry (which, incidentally, I could easily eat each and every day of the week), and then I decided to try my hand at a crumble.

Everything was prepared before hand – lovely apple mixture smelling like Christmas, and a pretty much perfect crumble mixture. I, however, decided to stick the crumble under the grill for a few minutes to brown off the top – purely aesthetics! Of course, I forgot the trial and error qualities of brand new, as yet unused grills – and didn’t realise that when the grill said it was heating up to 280 degrees (280 DEGREES!), that that was what it would actually do.

To cut a long story short, it set fire to the crumble. I opened the oven to check on it, and woosh, there were flames! Second time around, these flames we come out of the oven when I opened the door. So I shut it! Around about this point I began rather calming questioning whether the fire brigade should be summoned, but then solved the problem with the old slide-tray-over-top-and-cut-of-the-air trick. Which, thank heavens, worked!

You know what though?! We resolutely slided off the charcoal on the top and ate the crumble – and aside from the slight ashy taste it was rather damn good!!
